Bollywood 90’s fashion is back in vogue

History truly repeats itself, especially in the case of beauty and fashion trends. Many iconic outfits made trendy by Bollwood heroes and heroines of the 1990’s are back in trend. I cannot say this for all, but as a millennial, I am totally up for such styles to be brought back, and it truly feels good to have trends that I can actually remember.

Over the years, I have noticed how fashion and Bollywood have marched hand in hand. Try to walk down memory lane with me as I make you recollect these styles:

Fancy lehengaActivewearDil to Pagal Hai was one film that made activewear really popular. Almost all of Karisma Kapoor’s outfits were heavily inspired by sportswear, and looked sexy enough for the gym. Among different sportswear clothes, the bicycle shorts has also made a comeback and is clearly visible on Instagram.

Fancy lehengas – Of course, I am not saying that lehengas are not in fashion- they have been so for several years. But their opulent style was what made them really noticeable back in the 1990’s, one example being Aishwarya Rai in Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. One also cannot forget the lehengas worn by Aishwarya in Jodha Akbar. You will see several experimental styles in these traditional dresses across movies.

Chiffon sarees – Many people remember Sridevi in a gorgeous chiffon saree from Mr India. Yet another extremely popular example was the yellow saree worn by Raveena Tandon in Mohra, vividly displayed in the iconic song, “Tip tip barsa paani”. This classical saree is still very popular as its breathable fabric makes it very comfortable during summers. Later in the 2010’s, Anushka Sharma wore two of these in “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil.”

Crop tops – A short sleeved garment for the upper body that is cut short to expose the stomach is known as a crop top.It has been around for several years and was visible in music videos by the Spice Girls for the very first time. The crop top was the best way for an actress to flaunt her toned midriff, and it went well with jeans and skirts. 90’s actresses Juhi Chawla, Shilpa Shetty, Madhuri Dixit Nene, and others were seen in these outfits, while Parineeti Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Alia Bhatt, Neha Dhupia, and some more actresses of today have appeared in crop tops.   Chiffon sarees in Bollywood

High waist pants – This is one trend which keeps coming back in fashion from time to time. It makes every individual look leaner and taller than usual. Karishma Kapoor has epitomized this look for several years. Trousers, jeans and high waist shorts were seen on others as well (Kajol in DDLJ) and were also very convenient for regular use.

Dungarees – Dungarees were already visible in Bollywood much before jumpsuits in the world. These trousers with straps over shoulders were worn by Govinda and Sanjay Dutt (Haseena Maan Jayegi) and Kajol (Kuch Kuch Hota Hai). Recently, Yami Gautam, Priyanka Chopra, and Kangana Ranaut have also been spotted wearing these.
